COSMOS NATURAL Hair Care: What the Certification Actually Means

Published: Lueur Beauté
In this article

“Natural hair care” is easy to put on a label. COSMOS NATURAL is different because it refers to a defined certification standard rather than a brand’s own wording.

For hair care, that means looking beyond the word “natural” and checking how the formula, sourcing, processing, manufacturing, packaging and labelling fit within the COSMOS-standard.

It is useful certification information — but it does not mean that every certified shampoo is fragrance-free, sulfate-free, vegan or automatically better for every scalp.

What Is COSMOS NATURAL?

COSMOS is an international standard for organic and natural cosmetics managed by COSMOS-standard AISBL.

The founding organisations include BDIH, Cosmébio, Ecocert, ICEA and the Soil Association.

The current COSMOS-standard Version 4.2 has applied since 1 September 2025.

Finished cosmetics can carry either the COSMOS NATURAL or COSMOS ORGANIC signature when they meet the relevant requirements.

What Does the Standard Actually Cover?

COSMOS certification is not based on one ingredient or one marketing claim.

The standard covers:

  • origin and processing of ingredients
  • product composition
  • storage and manufacturing
  • packaging
  • environmental management
  • labelling and communication
  • inspection, certification and control

Certification is performed by an authorised Certification Body.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean 100% Natural?

No.

COSMOS NATURAL should not automatically be translated as “100% natural”.

Version 4.2 does not require a minimum percentage of organic ingredients for COSMOS NATURAL products, and the standard also defines limited allowances for certain petrochemical moieties.

The most useful approach is to check the natural-origin percentage stated for the individual product instead of assuming every certified formula has the same composition.

COSMOS NATURAL vs COSMOS ORGANIC

The two signatures are not simply “good” and “better”. They have different requirements.

COSMOS NATURAL does not require a minimum percentage of organic ingredients.

COSMOS ORGANIC adds organic-content requirements. Under Version 4.2, most products require at least 20% organic content, while certain categories — including some rinse-off products — use a 10% minimum.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Sulfate-Free?

No.

This is especially important in hair care.

A shampoo can be COSMOS NATURAL certified and still contain a sulfate-based surfactant that is permitted under the standard.

For example, Lueur Beauté Sensitive Scalp Shampoo contains Sodium Coco-Sulfate.

That means it should not be described as sulfate-free.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Silicone-Free?

The standard restricts ingredient categories and processing according to defined criteria, but shoppers should still evaluate the actual INCI rather than reducing the certification to one “free-from” claim.

Certification is broader than a simple checklist such as “no silicones, no fragrance, no preservatives”.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Fragrance-Free?

No.

COSMOS-certified hair products can contain fragrance components that comply with the standard.

If fragrance matters to you, check the individual product.

Example: Sensitive Scalp Shampoo

Lueur Beauté Sensitive Scalp Shampoo is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife and contains 98% ingredients of natural origin.

It is specifically formulated for dry, delicate and sensitive scalp needs and is dermatologically tested.

It is also Vegan and Nut Free.

However, it is not fragrance-free and it contains Sodium Coco-Sulfate.

This is a good example of why certification should not be confused with “fragrance-free” or “sulfate-free”.

Example: Moisturising Shampoo

Lueur Beauté Moisturising Shampoo with Aloe Vera is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife with 99% ingredients of natural origin.

It is suitable for all hair types and is positioned for moisture, softness and smoothness.

The formula contains Aloe Juice, Sodium PCA and botanical extracts.

It is Vegan, Gluten Free and Nut Free.

It is not fragrance-free and also contains Sodium Coco-Sulfate.

Does Certification Mean a Shampoo Is Better for Sensitive Scalp?

Not automatically.

COSMOS certification tells you that the product meets the standard. It does not guarantee that every certified shampoo will suit every sensitive scalp.

Scalp tolerance still depends on the complete formula, fragrance, surfactants, wash frequency and individual sensitivity.

A product specifically designed and tested for sensitive scalp is more relevant than certification alone.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Vegan?

No.

COSMOS certification and vegan status are separate claims.

This matters particularly in hair care because hydrolyzed keratin may be animal-derived.

Example: Keratin Shine Leave-In Hair Mist

Lueur Beauté Keratin Shine Leave-In Hair Mist is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife with 99% ingredients of natural origin.

It contains Hydrolyzed Keratin derived from sheep wool.

That means the product is not Vegan, despite being COSMOS NATURAL certified.

It is designed for damaged, frizzy or fragile hair and is used on clean, damp hair without rinsing.

What About Keratin Volume Hair Care?

Lueur Beauté Keratin Volume Boost Shampoo is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife with 99% ingredients of natural origin and 4% ingredients of organic origin.

It contains Hydrolyzed Keratin, Caffeine, Rosemary Oil and Sodium PCA and is designed for fuller-looking hair.

A Vegan claim is not stated.

Lueur Beauté Keratin Volume Boost Conditioner is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife with 98% ingredients of natural origin and 7% ingredients of organic origin.

It also contains Hydrolyzed Keratin, so a Vegan claim should not be assumed.

The formula contains Sweet Almond Oil, so a Nut Free claim is also not supported.

What About Hair Masks?

Lueur Beauté Keratin Intensive Rescue Hair Mask is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife with 98% ingredients of natural origin and 12% ingredients of organic origin.

It contains Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Sodium PCA, Vitamin E and Shea Butter.

A Vegan claim is not stated, and the formula contains Hydrolyzed Keratin.

It is also not fragrance-free.

What About COSMOS ORGANIC Hair Care?

Lueur Beauté Rosemary Hair & Scalp Oil carries the COSMOS ORGANIC signature rather than COSMOS NATURAL.

Its current product data states:

  • 100% ingredients of natural origin
  • 69% ingredients of organic origin
  • COSMOS ORGANIC Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife

The product is designed as a pre-wash nourishing treatment for dry or brittle hair and scalp.

It should not be presented as a guaranteed hair-growth treatment.

Does COSMOS Certification Mean Better Hair Growth?

No.

COSMOS certification does not prove that a shampoo, oil or treatment increases hair growth.

Hair-growth claims need separate evidence for the specific ingredient, concentration and finished product.

Does COSMOS Certification Mean Less Hair Damage?

Not automatically.

Breakage and hair damage depend on the complete product formula, conditioning system, heat exposure, chemical processing, friction and handling.

A certification standard cannot replace evaluation of the actual product function.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Shampoo Lather Less?

Not necessarily.

Lather depends on the surfactant system, concentration, water hardness, hair condition and the amount of oil or styling residue present.

Certified shampoos are not required to produce a “lighter lather” than conventional shampoos.

Are Plant-Derived Surfactants Always Gentler?

No.

Ingredient origin alone does not determine irritation potential.

Surfactant type, concentration, formula pH, contact time and the complete formulation matter more than a simple “plant-derived vs synthetic” distinction.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Better for Colour-Treated Hair?

No blanket rule supports that.

Colour retention depends on surfactant system, wash frequency, water temperature, hair porosity and the full formula.

A certified shampoo should still be chosen according to the specific hair concern rather than certification alone.

What Should You Look for on the Label?

When evaluating COSMOS-certified hair care, check:

  • whether the signature is COSMOS NATURAL or COSMOS ORGANIC
  • which Certification Body is named
  • the natural-origin percentage
  • the organic-origin percentage, if stated
  • whether Vegan is separately claimed
  • whether the product contains fragrance
  • whether the formula actually suits your scalp or hair concern

How Can You Verify Certification?

Look for the COSMOS signature together with the authorised certifier or association mark on the product information.

COSMOS also maintains an official Certified Products Directory.

ECOCERT Greenlife is one of the authorised COSMOS Certification Bodies.

What Certification Does Not Tell You

COSMOS certification does not automatically tell you:

  • whether a product is fragrance-free
  • whether it is Vegan
  • whether a shampoo is sulfate-free
  • whether it will suit sensitive scalp
  • whether it will prevent hair loss
  • whether it will preserve hair colour better
  • whether it will outperform a non-certified formula

A Practical Way to Choose Certified Hair Care

Use certification as one layer of information, then choose the product according to the actual concern.

For example:

  • sensitive scalp: choose a formula specifically designed and tested for sensitive scalp
  • dry or dull hair: look for conditioning and moisturising ingredients
  • lack of volume: look for lightweight, volume-focused formulations
  • breakage: look for conditioning and protein-focused products if your hair tolerates them

Certification should support the decision, not replace it.

What the Certification Really Means

COSMOS NATURAL is useful because it provides a defined, independently controlled standard for natural cosmetics.

For hair care, it can tell you something meaningful about ingredient sourcing, processing, manufacturing, packaging and certification — but it should not be treated as shorthand for “gentler”, “safer”, “Vegan”, “fragrance-free”, “sulfate-free” or “more effective”.

The best choice is still the product whose formula matches your actual hair and scalp needs.
