How to Build a Simple Nighttime Skincare Routine
Share
Most skincare happens at night. Not because night creams are magic, but because the skin's repair processes are most active during sleep — and a well-structured evening routine works with that biology rather than against it.
The problem is that “nighttime routine” has become synonymous with complexity. Ten steps, multiple actives, layers that take 20 minutes to apply. For most people, this level of complexity isn't necessary — and it often creates more problems than it solves.
Here's how to build a nighttime routine that's simple, effective, and actually sustainable.

Why nighttime matters for skincare
During sleep, the skin shifts from defence mode to repair mode. Cortisol levels drop, cell regeneration accelerates, and transepidermal water loss increases — meaning the skin loses more moisture overnight than during the day. Blood flow to the skin increases, which enhances the absorption and effectiveness of topical ingredients.
This means evening is the right time for actives that support repair — peptides, ceramides, retinol alternatives — and the wrong time for SPF and vitamin C (which work best as daytime antioxidants). Read more: How to Layer Skincare Products: The Correct Order.
Step 1: Cleanse properly
Evening cleansing is more important than morning cleansing. During the day, the skin accumulates SPF, pollution, makeup, and oxidised sebum — all of which need to be removed before any treatment step can work.
A gentle, non-stripping cleanser is what you're looking for. If you wear heavy SPF or makeup, consider a two-step cleanse: an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve SPF and makeup, followed by a gentle foam or gel cleanser to remove remaining residue. Step 2: Treatment serum
This is the core of an effective nighttime routine. Treatment serums deliver active ingredients while the skin is in repair mode — the timing amplifies their effect.
For collagen support and fine lines: Our Peptide Anti-Aging Serum combines multiple peptide complexes with hyaluronic acid. Peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen — consistent evening use over 8–12 weeks produces visible improvement in skin texture and firmness. For cell renewal without irritation: Our Retinol Alternative Moisturiser uses Bidens Pilosa — a plant-derived ingredient that supports skin renewal without the dryness, peeling, or photosensitivity associated with traditional retinol. It can be used nightly, including in your 20s and 30s. Read more: What Is Bakuchiol and Why Is It Replacing Retinol?
For brightening and pigmentation: Niacinamide reduces melanin transfer and supports barrier function — applied in the evening, it works steadily overnight. Our Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser pairs 5% niacinamide with hydrating actives for both treatment and moisture in a single step. Step 3: Moisturiser
A nighttime moisturiser has one primary job: slow down transepidermal water loss while the skin repairs itself. This means you want something richer than your daytime moisturiser — one that contains both humectants (to draw moisture in) and occlusives or ceramides (to keep it there).
Our Ceramide Night Cream is formulated for overnight barrier repair. Ceramides are the lipids that make up the skin barrier itself — replenishing them topically helps the barrier retain moisture and recover from daily stress. Apply as the final step, patting gently into the skin rather than rubbing. Read more: What Are Ceramides and Why Does Your Skin Need Them?
Optional: Eye area
The skin under the eyes is the thinnest on the face and loses moisture faster overnight. If dark circles, fine lines, or puffiness are a concern, apply a small amount of eye cream along the orbital bone before your moisturiser. Our Smoothing Eye Cream combines escin, peptides, and hydrating actives specifically for the under-eye area. Read more: Eye Cream for Dark Circles: What Ingredients Actually Work.
Optional: Targeted weekly treatments
Once or twice a week, you can add an exfoliation step before your serum. AHA exfoliants accelerate cell turnover, improve texture, and enhance the absorption of everything applied after. Use before your treatment serum, not after — and skip on nights when you're using a retinol alternative to avoid over-sensitising the skin.
A complete nighttime routine
Simple (3 steps):
Cleanser → Peptide Serum → Ceramide Night Cream
Standard (4 steps):
Cleanser → Niacinamide or Peptide Serum → Eye Cream → Ceramide Night Cream
With exfoliation (once or twice a week):
Cleanser → AHA exfoliant → Peptide Serum → Ceramide Night Cream
The simpler version will produce real results with consistent use. Complexity is only worth adding when you have a specific concern that a single active isn't addressing.
What not to do in your nighttime routine
Don't apply SPF in the evening — it has no function overnight and adds unnecessary product to the skin. Don't use vitamin C at night if it causes sensitivity — it works best in the morning as a daytime antioxidant. Don't apply too many actives at once — choose one treatment focus per evening rather than layering multiple potent ingredients. Read more: Why Your Skincare Routine Is Not Working.
Realistic expectations
A nighttime routine produces results over weeks, not days. Peptides and ceramides show measurable improvement in skin texture and hydration within 4–8 weeks of consistent use. Cell-renewal ingredients like bakuchiol show results over 8–12 weeks. The compounding effect of a consistent routine over months is what produces genuinely visible change — not any single product used occasionally.
