What Does COSMOS NATURAL Certified Really Mean?

Words such as “natural,” “organic” and “clean” can be used differently across brands and markets. A certification is useful because it gives shoppers a defined standard and an independent certification process to look for.

COSMOS NATURAL is one of the recognised signatures used for cosmetics that meet the COSMOS-standard. But it is important to understand what the certification does — and does not — mean.

What Is COSMOS?

The COSMOS-standard is managed by COSMOS-standard AISBL, an international, independent non-profit association based in Brussels. Its founding organisations are BDIH, Cosmébio, Ecocert, ICEA and the Soil Association.

The current COSMOS-standard Version 4.2 has applied since 1 September 2025.

COSMOS has two signatures for finished cosmetic products: COSMOS NATURAL and COSMOS ORGANIC.

What Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean?

A cosmetic carrying the COSMOS NATURAL signature must comply with the requirements of the COSMOS-standard for natural certification. The standard covers much more than a single ingredient claim. It includes requirements relating to:

• the origin and processing of ingredients
• product composition
• storage and manufacturing
• packaging
• environmental management
• labelling and communication
• certification and control

Certification is carried out by an authorised Certification Body and, under Version 4.2, is based on documentary validation and an on-site inspection covering the process from ingredient checks to final product validation.

COSMOS NATURAL vs. COSMOS ORGANIC

The two signatures should not be treated as a simple “good versus better” ranking. They certify different requirements.

COSMOS NATURAL is available for products that comply with the COSMOS-standard under the natural certification rules. The standard does not require a minimum percentage of organic ingredients for COSMOS NATURAL products.

COSMOS ORGANIC adds specific organic-content requirements. Under Version 4.2, at least 20% of the total product generally needs to be organic, with a 10% minimum for certain categories such as rinse-off products, non-emulsified aqueous products and products containing at least 80% minerals or ingredients of mineral origin. Additional requirements also apply to physically and chemically processed agro-ingredients.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean 100% Natural?

No. COSMOS NATURAL certification should not automatically be interpreted as “100% natural.”

The standard defines how the natural-origin percentage is calculated, and COSMOS NATURAL products must indicate the percentage of natural-origin ingredients on the label, except where the product is 100% natural origin and the standard allows that percentage indication to be omitted.

This is why the actual percentage shown for an individual product matters more than assuming every COSMOS NATURAL formula has the same composition.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Organic?

No. A COSMOS NATURAL product can contain organic ingredients, but there is no minimum organic-content requirement for the NATURAL signature. If a product also states an organic-origin percentage, that figure refers to the specific formula and should be read separately from its natural-origin percentage.

Does COSMOS Certification Only Cover Ingredients?

No. Ingredient origin and processing are important parts of the standard, but the scope also includes manufacturing, storage, packaging, environmental management and labelling. For example, Version 4.2 requires quality-control systems that cover traceability, manufacturing procedures, testing and records, while packaging must meet defined criteria.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Fragrance-Free?

No. COSMOS NATURAL certification is not the same as a fragrance-free claim. A certified product may contain fragrance ingredients that comply with the applicable COSMOS requirements. If avoiding fragrance is important to you, check the individual product’s INCI list rather than relying on the certification alone.

Does COSMOS Certification Mean Vegan?

No. COSMOS certification and vegan status are separate questions. The COSMOS-standard permits certain ingredients produced by animals when specific conditions are met, so a COSMOS-certified product should not automatically be assumed to be vegan. Check the individual product information for a separate vegan claim.

Does COSMOS NATURAL Mean Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

Not automatically. COSMOS certification verifies compliance with the COSMOS-standard; it does not guarantee that every certified formula will suit every skin type. Sensitive skin can react to many different ingredients, including ingredients of natural origin. Check the product’s stated skin type, fragrance information and full INCI list.

A Verified Lueur Beauté Example

The Bioactive Prebiotics Jelly Serum is COSMOS NATURAL Certified by ECOCERT Greenlife. Its product data states:

• 99% natural origin of total
• 10% organic origin of total
• vegan
• dermatologically tested
• gluten free and nut free

The formula contains prebiotics, Sodium PCA, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Hyaluronate and is designed to support hydration, the skin microbiome and the protective skin barrier. It is suitable for all skin types.

It is also a useful example of why certification should not be confused with “fragrance-free”: the serum’s INCI includes Parfum/Fragrance and Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli) Oil.

How Can You Check Whether a Product Is Really COSMOS Certified?

Look for the COSMOS NATURAL or COSMOS ORGANIC signature together with the mark of the responsible certifier or association. The label should also identify the Certification Body.

You can then use the official COSMOS Certified Products Directory to check certified products. ECOCERT Greenlife is one of the Certification Bodies authorised by COSMOS.

How to Read a COSMOS-Certified Product Label

Instead of looking only for the word “natural,” check several pieces of information together:

1. Is the signature COSMOS NATURAL or COSMOS ORGANIC?
2. Which authorised Certification Body is named?
3. What natural-origin percentage is stated?
4. If an organic percentage is shown, what exactly does it refer to?
5. Does the INCI list contain ingredients you personally prefer to avoid?
6. Are separate claims such as vegan, fragrance-free or dermatologically tested actually stated for that product?

Is COSMOS NATURAL the same as COSMOS ORGANIC?
No. Both are COSMOS signatures for finished cosmetics, but COSMOS ORGANIC has additional organic-content requirements.
